THE ENTRANCE GATEWAY TO AMSTERDAM, ‘THE ENTREE’

In the Central Station area, Amsterdam is to get a new entrance gateway which will be pleasing, safe, and readily accessible for travellers, visitors and residents. It will be an entrance with more water, fewer cars, and more space for pedestrians and cyclists.

To achieve this over the coming years, the city-centre side of Amsterdam Central Station will be renewed over the complete length of the Station Island. The Prins Hendrikkade (Prins Hendrik Quayside) between the Oosterdokseiland Bridge and the Martelaarsgracht (Quayside) will be renovated. Between the Damrak and the Martelaarsgracht the road will be pedestrianised (car-free). The Westertoegang (Western Approach), which is the road under the railway at the western end of the Station Island, will be lowered. There will be more water in front of the Station. Below water level there will be an underground bicycle-parking  facility. New mooring and landing places will be created, as well as underground space for services for ships and boats. The station’s central square will be clad in natural stone, and two new tramyards will be provided. The project ‘New Entrance Gateway’ is connected to the project ‘De Rode Loper’ (the Red Carpet), and together they will form the main gateway to the city of Amsterdam.
