KOLKSLUIS RENOVATION, SPAARNDAM

The monumental lock with chamber in Spaarndam is Europe’s oldest still functioning lock and was constructed in 1280(!).
16th and 17th century buildings are also located a short distance from the lock. The lock quaysides are, however, at the end of their service life and need to be replaced. Contracted by Beens Groep for the ‘Kolksluis Renovation, Spaarndam’ project.

GEO2 Engineering B.V. has produced the complete geotechnical design for the quay replacement. The entire lock will be filled temporarily with sand and will dry out as a result, enabling the existing structure to be stabilised and removed without much distortion. This can then be replaced with new anchored sheet piles. It is vital that adjacent historic buildings are not impacted in any way during the process and that these buildings are taken into account as part of the entire design.

A brief summary of the works implemented by GEO2 for this design is given below:

  • Soil survey and determination of soil parameters;
  • Formulating geotechnical starting points;
  • Conducting exploratory phase for the design to be implemented;
  • Design for filling the lock;
  • Sheet piling and anchor design;
  • Distortion analysis for adjacent buildings;
  • Involved in formulating a monitoring plan.
