KANAALWEG UNDERPASS, DIEREN

The project ‘Kanaalweg Underpass, Dieren’ (KUD) is part of the Traverse Dieren project, which is intended to promote free flow of traffic along the provincial roads N348 and N786. KUD involves one of the considerations: creating an underpass for fast traffic, combined with a new connection from the Zuider Parallelweg. Slow traffic will be connected with the newly extended Kattenberg. The underpass replaces the current on-the-level crossing of the Kanaalweg with the railway between Zutphen and Dieren. The road underpass will be constructed using concrete U-form elements with a closure piece at the railway crossing and along the extended Kattenberg. The underpass rests on shallow foundations. Another part of this project involves the adaptation and replacement of the construction of the bank along the Apeldoorn Canal on the North side and the South side of the underpass. Prorail has commissioned BAM Infra B.V. to construct the underpass. Construction will start in the Autumn of 2018 and will take about 18 months to complete.

BAM Infra B.V. has commissioned GEO2 Engineering B.V. to work out the geotechnical design for the underpass and for the construction aids. Because the new rail underpass will be constructed immediately alongside the existing railway bridge (with a cemented shallow foundation dating from the end of the 19th century, about 1870) the emphasis in this project is on the influence of vibrations and deformations on the local environment. In addition to the geotechnical design of the underpass and construction aids, GEO2 has also given attention to the preparatory work for additional research and risk management, including a vibration risk analys.
