ALMELO - DE HAANDRIK CANAL
In the Province of Overijssel, the Almelo–De Haandrik canal is lined with sheet pile walls along nearly its entire length of approximately 42 km, forming the primary bank protection structure. An initial reassessment of the structural capacity of these sheet pile walls indicated that they no longer meet current standards and guidelines.
However, observations in practice show that the sheet pile walls remain stable. To gain further insight, field tests were conducted at eight locations, where the sheet pile walls were subjected to controlled test loads using big bags and/or steel weights.
In addition, supplementary soil investigations and laboratory testing are being carried out. These will be followed by detailed analyses to verify the actual strength of the retaining structures.
GEO2 Engineering provides geotechnical expertise for the Province of Overijssel. The field tests were designed and analyzed by GEO2 Engineering. The company has also advised on the soil and laboratory investigations and will be responsible for the further detailed engineering.
